What kind of words can you speak that will bring life to those around you? Here are three kinds of words–words of life–you can offer:
1. Words of Encouragement
In today’s world, people are discouraged and in need of a good word. They are starved to know that they are loved and that they matter. A little kindness, compassion, and love go a long way. Share the encouragement Jesus has given you. Speak words of encouragement to everyone you meet.
“Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them,” Ephesians 4:29, NLT.
2. Words of Hope
To those who have no hope, you may be the one God uses to lift their spirits, soothe their hearts, or even turn their lives around in a positive direction. In the workplace, at home, on social media, criticism and attitudes of defeat test us daily. Share your testimony. Tell others about the hope of the world, Jesus. Speak words of hope wherever you go.
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future,'” Jeremiah 29:11, NIV.
3. Words of Comfort
The person who sits next to you, the neighbor down the street, the members of your own family, even Facebook friends–no matter who it is, you’ll come across those who need a smile, a hug, or a comforting word. We never know who may be experiencing loss, trauma, or fear. And haven’t we all, at one time or another? Speak words of comfort to those around you. Give them words of life from the One who is Life and Who has comforted you. Share God’s words from the Bible, His Word.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God,” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, NIV.
You Can Make a Difference
Your words can make a difference. In the same way that God offers us hope, encouragement, and comfort, we can speak thoughtful words to others. Such a small thing, but what a huge difference. Your words can truly speak life–to those who are dying to hear them.
“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word,” 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17, NIV.

My Personal Prayer for You
Lord, our words can heal or destroy. Fill our mouths with the kind of words that bring life, joy, and encouragement to others. We all need each other, and we all need Your encouragement in our lives. And you have given us the privilege of comforting and building others up with the words we speak.
Forgive us for failing to listen to others, and for our hurtful rants or criticisms. Sometimes we speak too soon and without thinking, and we hurt the ones we really love. Because we belong to You, Lord, we want to reflect Your character in all we do, whether in word or deed. Thank You for speaking words of life to us through Scripture. Thank You that You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
