When the Weeds in Your Life Keep Growing
May 14, 2012
Most of us hate weeds. They take over our yards and our gardens and make life generally miserable. But what about the weeds in our lives? Can they serve a greater purpose?
Don’t touch those weeds! Here’s a story I wrote several years ago that illustrates what I’m talking about: Read more

Bible Promise for Today: Growing Stronger

“But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. for they are transplanted into the LORD’s own house. They flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green. They will declare, ‘The LORD is just! He is my rock! There is nothing but goodness in him!’ (Psalm 92:12-15, NLT)
Is Your Goal to Stay Beautiful?
Today people spend ridiculous amounts of money trying to keep themselves young and beautiful. “Old” is not a goal, but a curse for many. Some worry about wrinkled skin or double chins. Others fear being placed on the “shelf,” replaced by younger candidates. But the fact is, we will all be there someday. We will all grow “old.”
The late Dick Clark testified that he learned to think younger by being around young people. And there may be some truth to that. But he still grew old, just like the young stars he helped to promote. Read more

Most of us heard about Hilary Rosen’s recent comments when she said Mitt Romney’s wife ”has actually never worked a day in her life.” A firestorm erupted with those words, and stay-at-home moms perked up to disagree. I’m re-posting this blog from two years ago, because to me it’s a beautiful illustration that a woman’s work is never done.
While this is only a bird‘s eye view of motherhood, I hope this encouragement for mothers will remind every mom, whether a stay-at home or otherwise, how valuable her “work” truly is. If you are a mom, we applaud you and celebrate you today–and everyday! God does, too!
A Bird’s Eye View of Motherhood
Every year a robin, cardinal, or blue-jay builds its nest somewhere in our back yard. But this is the first time I’ve ever watched its “family” grow. This is the first time a bird has ever nested on top of one of our gutters, protected under the eaves of the house. And this is the first time I ever witnessed a baby robin–or any “baby” bird take its first flight, and see the nest empty before my eyes. Read more
Thank God? Why Should We?

“Thank God!” someone yells. Another asks, “Why should we?”
It’s the season for devastating storms. Fourteen tornadoes swirled through my part of the world last week. Weathermen reported a twister on the ground a few miles from town, headed in a direct path for our neighborhood. My husband and I prayed and took cover in the bathtub for several minutes, protected by sofa cushions. Read more

When Broken Becomes Whole

The disciples could not comprehend Jesus’ words at His Last Supper with them. For three years He had taught them, fed them, and lived with them, preparing them for such a time as this. When Jesus’ fingers broke the bread and passed it out to his chosen twelve, He was telling yet another story—a true one about to unfold before their eyes. Read more

You’ve called. You’ve prayed. You’ve asked. You’ve waited. But heaven gives no answer. Why is God silent?
Forget the formulas. God deals with each person uniquely, and we can’t always answer the why’s to our own satisfaction. Here are some reasons you won’t find why God is silent. Read more
